Pencil Shavings & Broken Glass

My poster explores the emotional themes that permeate the novel and film, particularly loss and anger. The poster comprises fragments of Conor’s past and present which are illustrated primarily through pencil shavings and broken glass. Both motifs are closely tied to Conor’s present. Where the shards of glass are symptomatic of Conor’s anger, pain and loss, the pencil shavings, by contrast, evoke a sense of calm. It is the solace Conor finds in drawing that these shavings are designed to capture. Likewise, I wanted Conor’s past to be prominent. The reflection of Conor and his mum’s shared painting in the broken glass is very much a glimpse into the past. Perhaps the film’s most iconic visual character, the Monster is the centrepiece around which Conor’s past and present plays out. The Monster’s downward gaze and running lines accentuate the sense of anguish that the poster aims to elicit. Conor’s hand-drawn Monster is therefore self-reflective here.
