Nidhanaya probe into the sub-conscious of a man who kills his wife and in turn kills himself. Willie Abeynayake, played by Gamini Fonseka, represents the land owning aristocracy of Ceylon in the twillight of their existence at the turn of the century. Black and white photography of M.S.Anandan creates a mood of Impending doom inside a stately but decaying mansion, where most of the action is located.

Nidhanaya won the Silver Lion Award at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, where it was considered one of the seven best films screened. It is the only Sri Lankan film to be included in the list of world’s 100 best films compiled by the Cinematheque Francaise to commemo- rate the centenary of the moving image.
