Copy Norman Rockwell as learning exercise.

I’ve been trying to get better texture in my digital paintings and so decided to practice by copying something. No pressure, just a Norman Rockwell piece…haha, but he did get amazing texture in his work so figured it was a good test.

I could have worked the sky a bit more but this did the job for now. Some of the tones aren’t quite right either but the texture is nearly there.

As per usual with my chase for a traditional look to my digital art, I worked out that it is mostly a process of layers of paint which make it look right. Just because you can grab any colour in the computer and paint with it straight away doesn’t make for very interesting images. In fact, it’s usually by having to ‘correct’ the image that makes it look right and have interesting texture and colour.

His compositional skills were pretty amazing too, everything is where it is for a reason.
