'Bill's Basement' - PosterSpy

Illustration created exclusively for Gallery 1988’s ’30 Years Later’ show which opened in January 2021 (online only due to COVID 19).

I wanted to create an illustration that captured the darkness and isolation experienced by Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) as she descended further into Buffalo Bill’s basement. I wanted to feature the pit containing Catherine Martin (you can see the wooden beams around the pit behind Clarice’s right shoulder), the moths and butterflies being cultivated and of course the skin suits and ‘sewing room’. I took some liberties with the layout of the basement but stuck closely enough to models of the set for maximum authenticity.

The ‘Night vision’ variant came to me half way through painting the original and naturally since I put little to no thought into it I liked it better despite having spent 10-12 hours planning and sketching the palette of the original.
