Selected by Freaks writer/directors Adam Stein & Zach Lipovsky

"We loved how this piece evoked the graffiti art style that recurs in the movie. By the end of the movie, Chloe is an iconic, feared person in this world — a character of legend whose existence is whispered about. This design captured that feeling."

Runner Up

Ertaç Altınöz

Selected by Freaks writer/directors Adam Stein & Zach Lipovsky

"This piece captures the sense of ominous curiosity that Chloe feels about the Mr Snowcone truck that haunts the outside of her house, and it hints at the mysterious potential that hides behind each new door in the Freaks story."

Honourable Mention

Phase Runner

Selected by Freaks writer/directors Adam Stein & Zach Lipovsky

"We also wanted to give an honourable mention / shout out to this incredible piece by artist Phase Runner. We loved the illustration of the house, with the glow from the attic where Chloe lives... and the shooting star hints at a key element from the end of the movie that I won’t spoil for you. I’m sorry you didn’t win Phase Runner, but we wanted you to know that we appreciate your awesome work! "

This Creative Brief is Closed.

Welcome to the PosterSpy creative brief for FREAKS, the new sci-fi thriller starring Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Grace Park, Amanda Crew, and 7-year-old newcomer Lexy Kolker.

To celebrate the US release, PosterSpy invites you to create a poster that evokes the surreal mystery and gripping suspense of the sci-fi story of FREAKS.

FREAKS comes out in cinemas in the US on September 13. It will also be playing at FrightFest in London on August 23

This Creative Brief is open to worldwide participants.

The Story

A seven-year-old girl named Chloe (Lexy Kolker) grows up locked in an abandoned house, dreaming of the world outside and what it might be like to have a mother. Chloe’s disturbed father (Emile Hirsch) warns her that if she ever goes outside, “the bad guys” will kill them both.

Chloe is plagued by horrific ghostly intruders who materialize in her room. And she’s tempted to explore the outside by an ominous ice cream truck driven by the mysterious Mr. Snowcone (Bruce Dern).

When Chloe eventually finds the courage to escape, she discovers that her father wasn’t lying. The whole world is hunting for people like them: people with special powers who are killed on sight. They are no heroes in this world, there are only “abnormals,” or even worse, “freaks,” feared for their abilities and known for their bleeding eyes.

Chloe’s father is trying to keep them safe from the fascist Abnormal Defense Force that took her mom (Amanda Crew). But Chloe must decide whether to hide with her father forever, or join Mr Snowcone to fight for what she most wants: her Mom.

Design Tips

Entrants are encouraged to draw on the film’s dark, surreal, and frightening sci-fi themes and premise, using the trailer and supplied stills.

Chloe (and her father) are hiding from the mysterious dangers of the world.

The suspicious Mr Snowcone is trying to tempt Chloe to go outside.

Chloe is fighting to save her Mom.

And the Abnormal Defense Force is hunting for Freaks.

We are also interested in designs that incorporate some of the iconic imagery in the film. You shouldn’t try to stuff everything into one design, but if you’re inspired, here are some of the recurring images in the film:

  • Locked doors
  • Taped up windows
  • Ice cream cones
  • The Mr Snowcone ice cream truck
  • Chloe’s artwork
  • Blood drips
  • Bleeding eyes
  • Graffiti art

Besides traditional film posters that capture the imagery of the film, we’re also interested in experimenting with government propaganda poster imagery from the point of view of the A.D.F., warning citizens about dangerous Freaks out there.

Please also find stills and all available assets via the “inspiration” tab for further reference and inspiration only. i.e You may use them to create your own illustrations, but you cannot use the images directly or simply add filters to them in your submission.

Create your posters at A4 300dpi minimum. Landscape or Portrait layout.

Upload posters to as RGB files no larger than 5MB and 1500 pixels wide.

Artwork submitted must be 100% your own original content. Do not use any images you don’t have the rights to. This includes stills from the film.

This Creative Brief will be judged by the FREAKS writer/directors Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky!
