Briefing

Entertainment One and PosterSpy invite you to create an alternative poster for THE DEATH OF STALIN the upcoming comedy from the writer-director of In The Loop and Alan Partridge.

Directed by Armando Iannucci, THE DEATH OF STALIN features an ensemble cast including Steve Buscemi, Simon Russell Beale, Jason Isaacs, Rupert Friend, Andrea Riseborough, Michael Palin, Paul Whitehouse and Jeffrey Tambor.

The story

The internal political landscape of 1950’s Soviet Russia takes on darkly comic form in THE DEATH OF STALIN.

It’s March, 1953. After a heavy night of drinking and an uncomfortable request to Radio Moscow (for the recording of a live concert which doesn’t exist), Stalin suffers a major seizure. The Central Committee rush to their great leader’s side; mainly to check up on his chances of recovery.  But – Stalin dies.

A dangerous game of power-play ensues in tandem with preparation for the Premier’s funeral. On the one side marches  Beria – ominous head of Russian Security, who holds incriminating files on each of his Inner Circle colleagues. On the other, a tentative Nikita Khrushchev – leader of Agricultural Reform. Khrushchev is terrified that with Beria in control, each and every one of the committee (along with everyone he holds dear – his wife, children… and the majority of Russia’s citizens) will end up shot. Or worse. Whilst trying to stop the USSR from sliding into a panicked meltdown, tension mounts, with Khrushchev and Beria locking horns as they realise that only one of them can survive.

Design Tips

The winning entries will be judged by PosterSpy who will be looking for creative showcasing of the film. You may use a broad range of styles for inspiration from heroic realism, constructivism, soviet propaganda or to your own style of creating. We want to draw from the themes of Russia and comedy of the film and create something striking yet humorous.
