Concepting for a Movie Poster

About Me

I am Jaime Ventura, a key artist who currently works for BLT Communications; an agency located in Los Angeles, California.

What does the concepting phase look like in a professional key art agency?

The concepting phase in such a fast-moving environment can get hectic. In order to nail strong concepts, designers may be expected to take anywhere from a few days, to even a few weeks depending on the deadline to brainstorm.

Here are the steps broken down into phases for ease of digestion:

  • Phase 1 – Sketching Phase
  • Phase 2 – Templating the Sketches
  • Phase 3 – Blocking out Concepts
  • Phase 4 – Rendering the Concepts
  • Phase 5 – Revisions (if needed)

Phase 1: We will pitch these concepts to our illustration department to get a better visual of what our idea is. Typically teams will also gather wardrobes, likenesses, and other such material to give illustration to hone in on our concept even more!

Phase 2: After a few days – or weeks – we will get the sketches back and designers may template them into a movie poster format. This will then be sent out to the client for approval. The studio then may schedule a photoshoot, in which they will go shoot anywhere from 10-60 thousand photos. This will then be sent back to our agency to scour and select then best shots!

Phase 3: The blocking phase is where things get fun. After the pre-determined sketches are visualized, some designers will build off that sketch using photography. We will also block out 20-30 other concepts of our own.

Phase 4: Once the blockouts (pretty much photography sketches) are approved, we can then get to the best part, RENDERING!

Which then leads us to Phase 5: Once we have our posters rendered and sent over to the client, we may get revisions – which can go on for, and no joke, weeks, to a month, to even a year.

Although this may sound daunting to some, it is a blast being able to work on official projects, getting to watch movies early, or even working with some of your favorite actors and actresses.

For many of the talented people here on PosterSpy, I hope you have learned something today!! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about being a key artist, or even just to say hi.
